Is there a better way to beat the heat than to cool down with a creamy cup or cone of gelato? Now more than just a passing fancy, the frozen Italian treat seems like it’s here to stay, what with numerous gelato places popping up all over the city. Ice cream’s more sophisticated cousin is denser, smoother, more flavorful, more intense, and less fattening—gelato uses less cream (yup, meaning less fat) than ice cream, which tends to mask the ice cream’s flavors and makes the taste more subdued.
